Spring Distribution & Storage Retrofit

Project Scope: Design and retrofit for a spring water distribution and storage system from an already developed spring head for purposes of providing gravity fed water to livestock.

Site Assessment: Flow rates for the spring were approximately 800-850 gpd for late season flow. Spring head was ~ 40′ higher in elevation after surveying the site than the ultimate storage location for the primary storage tank after crossing a valley bottom. Livestock watering troughs were in place but not well located to encourage even grazing utilization by the cattle. There was no overflow piping at the spring head, nor any sort of shut-off valve at the stock tank, which led to a muddy mess around the tank.

Installation: Over the course of 3 days, the spring head was cleaned and retrofitted with appropriate overflow piping to return water to the existing creek line and the seal around the spring box was improved. 1850′ linear feet of 1″ HDPE line was run from the spring head down the valley and up the other side to the location of the 5,000 gallon storage tank, which was plumbed with an emergency overflow outlet to return water to the creek once the tank was completely full. Another 2,000′ linear feet of 1″ HDPE line was run down-valley to anther 2,500 gallon storage tank fitted with a float valve, and distribution plumbing from this tank was retrofitted to serve several livestock watering troughs at the cattle pen just downhill. Due to the undulating nature of the terrain, the initial run to the upper storage tank had to have several vacuum breaks installed at precise locations in order to maintain unobstructed flow.
