Big Sur Spring

Spring Water Storage & Pumping System

Project Scope: Design and implementation of a spring water storage and pumping system to integrate with the existing off-grid water infrastructure of well water storage tanks. The property owner’s well had rapidly declined in yield and was not producing enough to be relied upon. A spring was already developed lower down on the property with a functioning collection system but no distribution other than an open pipe.

A 250 gallon collection tank was installed to collect water from the spring in batches. A spigot was installed on the tank to permit direct access to the water at the spring head by the land owner and neighbors who have been coming to the spring for years. Inside the tank a series of float switches were rigged to turn on a jet pump when the tank was full and pump it down to ~ 20% capacity, at which point it would shut off and wait for the tank to fill again. A 1″ HDPE line was run uphill to the well water storage and fire reserve tanks 200′ higher in elevation at the top of the property through which the spring water was pumped. A float valve was installed at this tank to shut off a pressure switch at the jet pump to prevent its operation when the tank was already full. An overflow pipe was installed from the spring water storage tank leading back to the creek into a small stone-lined pool set up to provide water for wildlife.
